When deciding upon which tiles to purchase, you may also want to consider what colour and width you would like the grout lines (cement joints) between each tile to be. For some tiles, particularly floor tiles with irregular edges, it is necessary to have a larger grout gap of around 8-10mm in order to achieve the correct finish. Straight edge wall tiles will tend to have a smaller gap of around 2-3mm. Grout comes in a wide variety of colours, and whilst white is the most common choice for walls, colours such as sandstone and light grey have a greater ability to disguise stains and are therefore preferential on floors. Another factor to take into consideration when choosing a tile is how you would like it to be set. Depending on the design of the tile, there are normally different ways in which it can be laid. Some of the more popular patterns are shown in sketch form below (click on image to enlarge):
